Rigid Grinding - Fine Grinding

Aka-Allegran

Aka-Allegran, available in 4 different versions, is recommended for fine grinding of metals and other materials that are harder than 150 HV.

Aka-Allegran 9 provides perfect planeness and edge retention. It is the hardest of our grinding discs and recommended for materials harder than 450 HV. It can replace grinding papers P320-P1200. Aka-Allegran 9 should be used with diamond suspension 15 - 3 µm.

Aka-Allegran 6 is the most universal disc in the range. It is the correct choice when an optimal balance between material removal and fine surface finish is required. Aka-Allegran 6 provides fast fine grinding of most materials with a hardness of above 150 HV. It is recommended to be used with 9 - 3 µm diamonds. It will replace the traditional grinding steps from P320 - P1200 with one single step.

Aka-Allegran 3 provides short preparation times, completely plane samples and retains soft phases (e.g. soft inclusions in steel). It is a medium hard disc that is recommended for materials harder than 150 HV. It replaces grinding papers in grit sizes P320-P1200. This grinding disc should be used with diamond suspension 9 - 3 µm.

Aka-Allegran 1 provides eminent flatness. This is the softest disc in the range and recommended for materials harder than 150 HV. This disc should be used with diamond suspension 1 - 0.1 µm. Aka-Allegran 1 can also be used for final polishing of very hard materials and coatings.

FAQ:

When is a rigid grinding disc the optimal choice for fine grinding?

A rigid grinding disc like Aka-Allegran or Aka-Largan is the best choice when plane samples, perfect edge retention or only a single fine grinding step is requested.

Which diamond suspension should I use when fine grinding on a rigid grinding disc?

When fine grinding, a high material removal is required. Therefore our more fluid (less viscous) diamond suspensions should be used.  The most user-friendly solution is DiaUltra, our unique 2-in-1 suspension. If you want to use diamond suspension and lubricant independently, then Aka-Poly or Aka-Poly+ together with our lubricant Aka-Clear+ are the best choice.

What is the difference between grinding with a diamond- or rigid grinding disc and grinding paper?

Diamond- and rigid grinding discs are quite hard and based on a thin steel plate. This results in much more plane samples with a perfect edge retention compared to the results obtained with grinding paper. They also have a very long lifetime and can outlast grinding papers a hundredfold. That makes diamond and rigid grinding discs a more economic and sustainable alternative with better preparation results.

For which type of materials can it be better to use a rigid grinding disc instead of grinding paper?

There are only very few materials where a rigid disc does not perform better than grinding paper. For very soft materials, like pure, non-ferrous metals or samples that contain phases or layers of these very soft materials it can happen that diamonds during preparation are embedded into these very soft materials. But, in general, all materials with a hardness higher than 50 HV can be prepared with better results on one of our rigid grinding discs.
