The magnetic discs surface stays clean and dryı
The edge also makes sure the surface of the magnetic discs stays clean and dry, thus improving the lifespan of the magnetic discs.
Polymer magnets are not chemical resistant
Most magnetic discs use a polymer based magnet. Polymer magnets are not very chemical resistant, and are often attacked by the chemicals used in lubricants. Especially oil and ethanol penetrate the magnet and causes it to swell. This happens at the edge of the magnet which becomes un-plane and must be discarded.
The magnet is glued on
Often the polymer magnet is glued on to the supporting discs. If the glue is not fully chemical resistant, it will be attacked, just like the polymer magnet. Over time this causes the magnet to come off.
ıSome water can be sprayed up under the edge, due to turbolence in the equipment. The amount of water is depending on the design of the equipment, some are worse than others.
